Local Food Bills move forward in Texas

Three pieces of legislation that address small farm and food business are on their way to the Texas Senate. House Bill 970 would expand the list of low-risk value-added products that small producers can sell without going through a costly commercial kitchen. House Bill 1382 aims to make it easier for vendors to provide samples at farmer’s markets. House Bill 1392 is designed to provide assistance to small-scale food producers in navigating legal parameters.

Bills like HB 970, also known as the Cottage Foods Bill, addresses farmers and small growers accessing and cultivating small portions of land. Supportive legislation will allow these growers to thrive, all the while using the sustainable practices and close attention made possible in part by their small scale.
