Webinar: Community Land Trusts

December 20, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm EST

This webinar is the first of the Expanding Ownership: Shared Ownership Models to Increase Access to Housing and Farmland series. Johanna Rosen from Agrarian Trust will be presenting.

This four-part event series is designed for professionals and community members who are passionate about increasing housing access OR farmland access and interested in learning about collaborative and community-based models to make ownership of real estate more accessible.

This event series is being co-hosted by the White River Valley Consortium, a collective effort to increase the availability of housing that is affordable for young workers and new entrepreneurs, and the White River Land Collaborative, which seeks to build a resilient land-based economy rooted in equitable land access, collaborative relationships, and community involvement. (However, you do not need to live in the White River Valley in order to participate!)

Organizers include Vital CommunitiesThe Center for Agriculture and Food Systems at Vermont Law and Graduate SchoolGreen Mountain Economic Development Corporationand Two Rivers-Ottauquechee Regional Commission.

A community land trust is a specific type of nonprofit organization that owns real estate and is governed by community residents in order to support local agriculture and food production, housing for low- and moderate-income residents, and other local priorities. Usually the farmers or residents also have a share of ownership to allow them to build equity; for example, in housing land trusts, often the CLT owns and leases out the land, but sells the housing structures to the occupants. This webinar will introduce the concept of a CLT and hear from examples of CLTs used in both an agricultural and a housing context.
